Mountain Types

Folded Mountains

  • Forces from the sides of the rock layers cause the rock layers to buckle and fold forming mountains.
  •

    Upwarped Mountains

  • Forces from below the rock layers push upward, lifting portions of the rock layers up above the surface of the surrounding landscape
  • Fault-block Mountains

  • One section of rock moves up while the other moves down causing faults in the rocks. Many times the rock layers are tilted in the process
  •

    Volcanic Mountains

  • Magma erupts onto the surface of the ground forming a cone surrounding the volcanic vent.
