Laing Park
Located on Box Butte Ave. between 18th and Burnam Dr., Laing park is most frequently
used for passive recreational activities such
as walking and jogging, picnicking, nature observation, playing with children,
and feeding the ducks and geese. Laing park features a
disc golf course which is free to the public and an established walking and
running path.

The Covered bridge was constructed over Laing Lake in 1999. It is an attractive addition to
this urban lake.

The City of Alliance Parks and Water Departments
began filling Laing Lake on April 29. The refill
process should be completed by July 1.
The lake was drained in the fall of 2001 after attempts to improve water quality were not
as effective as expected. After analyzing soil samples it was determined that there was a
large amount of nutrient-loaded sediment at the bottom of the west basin, which was
having a negative impact on water quality. The sediment has been deposited over the
years due primarily to the high population of waterfowl on the lake. City crews have
removed 3,712 tons of nutrient-loaded sediment from the west basin of Laing lake, and
have also used this opportunity to remove other debris such as old tires, wire, and other
large items.
The city is now working with Plateau Ecosystems of Denver, who will reinstall the
aeration system to ensure that quality of the water is maintained after the lake is filled.
The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission has discussed stocking the lake this fall to
restore Laing Lake as an urban fishery.
